Revamping the past, drinking the Present!

THE PAST
Redhook's Limited Releases program has allowed them to stay competitive in the craft beer scene. Their 28th Anniversary Eisbock pays tribute to a somewhat obscure and quite old style.
Originating in Kulmbach, Bavaria an Eisbock is a strong German Lager.
Brewers take an already strong beer, Doppelbock, then partially freeze the beer in order to remove some of the water, thus increasing the alcohol content.
In modern brewing, there are many ways to increase the abv, but the Germans were one of the pioneer  strong beers and this practice of freezing is still used in order to achieve extremely high alcohol beers!
Redhook's Eisbock 28 is well balanced and complex with solid notes of rye, grains, herbal hops, and a solid grapefruit bitterness.

THE PRESENT
Over the last year or so, the Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale has become an incredibly popular style.
Arguably created by Deschutes, who insist it be referred to as a Cascadian Dark Ale, because of it's origins in the Cascades, this style is one of the biggest trends in craft brewing.
When done correctly, this style results in an amazingly complex and interesting beer. Tamarack's version, Double Black Diamond, was definitely a good example. Solid malt presence with notes of bittersweet chocolate, followed by a well balanced and distinct hop character of citrus and pine. Another solid beer from a rather obscure Montana brewpub. Hope to see them start to bottle or even better, can their beer at some point!
